Castro explica a Ferrater quina és la seva vida a La Jolla i li parla de les persones amb qui ha establert uns lligams intel·lectuals més fèrtils: Richard Popkin, professor de filosofia, i Roy Pearce, professor d'anglès. S'interessa per la salut de Ferrater perquè li consta que va patir alguna molèstia en una estada recent a Barcelona. Li fa saber que anirà a Òxford i a París (li demana que li recomani un hotel) i també que s'estarà uns dies a Espanya amb la família (a casa del seu gendre X. Zubiri)
